HEALTH

The Health Ministry at St. Paul's is a combined effort of the Health Committee and the Parish Nurse to promote health, wellness and education; serving members with health challenges; sharing God's peace and comfort.

The Health Committee
The Health Committee's goal is to comfort and serve those with health challenges and to promote churchwide awareness of healthy habits through its programs. Committee members coordinate and volunteer with one or more health-related projects throughout the year, such as health screenings, fellowship events, support groups and workshops.  The committee meets nine times a year (no meetings June, July or December) on the 4th Monday of the month in the Church Lounge at 7:00 pm (6:45 pm fellowship).

The Parish Nurse
The Parish Nurse works one-on-one to assist congregation members with various health concerns, such as explaining health conditions, monitoring blood pressures, finding community resources, directing members to the appropriate physicians for diagnosis, comforting members in times of illness, educating on health and wellness, and praying for and with members. The Parish Nurse works in concert with the Senior Pastor, Associate Pastor, and the Visitation Pastor to serve the body of Christ in times of wellness and illness, comfort and crisis.

Community Health Events
Here are some links to various classes, programs and support groups within the local community which promote health:

   Walk to Bethlehem--October 3rd-December 25th
What is it? A 12-week program that challenges the church to walk the 6468 miles (as the crow flies) from Des Peres to Bethlehem. You can see our progress on the map on the bulletin board outside the west door to fellowship hall.

Why should I participate? Walking (running, cardiovascular exercise) improves your heart health, physical conditioning, weight, self-esteem, and lifts spirits. Each participant will receive a booklet containing a 12-week devotional and mileage log. There are also weekly prayer and mileage cards available on the bulletin board outside the west door to fellowship hall.
How do I know how far a mile is? You can purchase a pedometer at Walmart, Target, or sporting goods stores. There are also maps of local parks available in the church office, which will tell you the mileage for the park’s trails. For cardio exercises (such as aerobics), 20 minutes equals 1 mile. What else do I have to do? Just log your weekly miles on the sheet on the bulletin board.

Want to make it more exciting? If you are a part of a group/committee, find another group/committee to challenge and see which group can walk more miles, or have a higher percentage of participating members. Challenge your spouse, child, friend.

How do I sign up? You can sign up at a table during Fellowship Breakfast on select Sundays in September or just list your name as a participant on the "Weeks of Progress” sheet on the bulletin board. Contact Jen Jaffe in the church office—314-822-0447x104 or jjaffe@stpaulsdesperes.orgif you have any questions.
